04-04-06 : The Mel Brooks Collection DVD Box Set

Well it looks like the Region 1 Mel Brooks DVD Collection has finally been released. The release includes Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part I (best buy ad says History of the World Part 2! Ha), Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, To Be Or Not To Be, High Anxiety, Silent Movie and the 12 Chairs.

The Good:

  • All fans should be happy that High Anxiety, Silent Movie, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, To Be or Not To Be and the 12 Chairs (re-released) are now readily available in Region 1
  • The box has cool art and the discs come in slim cases
  • History of the World Part I has a new anamorphic transfer (supposedly)
  • Does not include Dracula Dead and Loving It
  • The set is lackluster enough that it may warrant a “special edition” version on next gen media (HD-DVD / Blu-Ray)

The Bad:

  • Most of the transfers seem to be exactly the same as those available by import for some time now
  • The version of Blazing Saddles is supposedly a flipper disc with poorer video and not the 30th Anniversary version
  • It’s rumored that Young Frankenstein was going to be anamorphic but the final one included is NOT
  • No cut scenes from movies like High Anxiety (despite media suggesting they exist)
  • Unable or didn’t try to negotiate with MGM/UA to include the Producers, Life Stinks & Spaceballs
